Book Recommendation – Letters of a Woman Homesteader

NAME: Letters of a Woman Homesteader

True Story, Wyoming, 1900’s

Author: Elinore Pruitt Stewart

Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Co., Boston and New York, 1914

Publishers’ Note: “The writer of these letters is a young woman who lost her husband to a railroad accident and went to Denver to seek support for herself and her two-year old daughter. Written to a former employer in Denver it tells the story of her new life in Wyoming. They are genuine letters of her life as it evolved in Wyoming and are printed as written except for occasional omissions and a few name changes.

MY OPINION: This is a heart warming illustration of determination an perseverance by one who had no formal education, but lots of grit. She tackled anything that needed to be done with a can-do spirit that succeeded more often than it failed. Without an ounce of self-pity, she did what had to be done.

One of the things that makes the book so fascinating is her ability to describe both her experiences and the landscape which has often been referred to as one of the wildest most difficult places to survive in the continental United States. Her scenes literally come alive and in the process you become acquainted with the unusual beauty of Wyoming as well as the difficulties encountered in the midst of heavy, heavy snow.

  1. Based on your recommendation, I found this to be a very inspiring autobiography. She was quite a woman, one I would be proud to emulate.
